Shocking revelations emerged as three Staten Island men faced federal hate crime charges for a series of alleged attacks in retaliation for Barack Obama’s election victory. Ralph Nicoletti, Michael Contreras, and Brian Carranza, aged 18 to 21, were arrested following allegations they targeted African-Americans.
On the night of Obama’s win, the trio, with another individual, reportedly sought out and assaulted a 17-year-old African-American youth. The group then attacked other victims, including an African-American man and a Latino man, before hitting an innocent passerby with a car in Port Richmond.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Grace Chung Becker condemned the alleged acts of racial violence, emphasizing the Justice Department’s commitment to prosecuting such incidents. ‘The Civil Rights Division will not tolerate conspiracy to commit acts of violence and intimidation,’ Becker said.
United States Attorney Benton J. Campbell echoed this sentiment, declaring that interference with constitutional rights, including the right to vote, would be harshly punished. The defendants, if convicted, face up to 10 years in prison.
