Former Oklahoma Corrections Officer Sentenced to 21 Months for Federal Civil Rights Violation
Jarrod Anthony Yates, once a guard at Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw, Okla., now sits behind bars following his conviction. On June 25, 2006, Yates physically abused an arrestee with punches and stomps, leaving the victim with life-altering injuries.
‘We must remember that correctional officers face danger daily, but that’s no excuse for this level of violence,’ says Acting Assistant Attorney General Grace Chung Becker. ‘The rule of law demands justice be served for those who abuse their power.’
The FBI and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division prosecuted the case, ensuring that Yates faced the consequences of his actions.
This sentence serves as a stark reminder to all corrections officers: the line between duty and abuse is clear, and violations will not be tolerated.
