Henderson Man Pleads Guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm

A 32-year-old Henderson man has pleaded guilty to a firearm charge in federal court, according to a statement released by U.S. Attorney Thomas G. Walker.

Daniel Carl Deel, of Henderson, North Carolina, pleaded guilty before Senior United States District Judge James C. Fox to Felon in Possession of a Firearm, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924.

According to the investigation, on August 13, 2012, Deel was in possession of a firearm after being convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.

Deel faces a maximum sentence of 120 months imprisonment, or 10 years, along with three years of supervised release at sentencing. The investigation was conducted by the Henderson Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney S. Katherine Burnette prosecuted the case.

The case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified ‘team effort’ against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.

Deel’s sentencing has not been scheduled yet, but the maximum sentence he faces sends a clear message to those who commit similar crimes in the area.

With the guilty plea, Deel’s case marks another victory for law enforcement in their fight against gun violence and those who perpetuate it.
