COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Columbus accountant has been handed a decade-long sentence for his role in a massive fraud and tax evasion scheme that resulted in losses of nearly $4 million.
Dennis G. Sartain, of Hilliard, was sentenced to 120 months by U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson after being convicted of conspiracy to defraud the United States, aiding in the filing of false tax returns, and more. The judge determined that Sartain’s actions caused over $1 million in tax loss and nearly $3.7 million in fraud loss.
The superseding indictment against Sartain detailed how he conspired with others to pay real estate professionals ‘under the table,’ preparing or aiding in the preparation of false Forms 1099 and individual income tax returns that significantly underreported earnings and taxes owed. Additionally, court documents revealed that Sartain shredded and concealed records pertinent to the investigation.
Sartain also pleaded guilty to filing fraudulent tax returns for himself and his wife, failing to report all of the income he received from a company between 2001 and 2004. He listed himself as ‘unemployed’ on tax forms in two of those years. Moreover, he admitted to aiding in the submission of false loan applications and money laundering activities.
In a statement, Assistant Attorney General Nathan J. Hochman emphasized that taxpayers who evade their obligations face severe consequences, branding Sartain a convicted felon for life. Eileen Mayer, IRS Chief Criminal Investigator, highlighted the agency’s commitment to investigating and holding accountable those who seek to circumvent tax laws.
In addition to his current charges, Sartain faces further charges from a 2008 indictment for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering, which are set for trial in December. The IRS special agents and federal prosecutors involved in the case were commended for their efforts.
