Trump Admin Funding Cuts Deemed Illegal Discrimination

NEW YORK – A federal judge has slammed the Trump administration’s attempt to kneecap vital medical research, ruling that the cancellation of National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants was blatant racial and LGBTQ+ discrimination. New York Attorney General Letitia James spearheaded the legal battle, and today, she secured a win that restores millions in funding for critical projects.

The case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, centered around the administration’s abrupt termination of previously approved NIH grants. These weren’t random cuts; they targeted research focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), LGBTQ+ health, and even studies into vaccine hesitancy. The administration claimed the projects “no longer effectuate agency priorities,” offering no legitimate justification beyond their focus on topics the administration disliked.

Judge William Young didn’t mince words. Last week, he verbally condemned the terminations as “appalling” discrimination, stating he had “never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable” in his 40 years on the bench. Today’s written ruling officially declared the grant terminations “arbitrary, capricious, and illegal,” effectively voiding them and reinstating hundreds of unjustly canceled grants. The judge made it clear: politics had no place in life-saving research.

In New York State alone, this ruling resurrects projects investigating Alzheimer’s disease in Asian and Latino Americans, substance abuse risks among LGBTQ+ youth, cardiovascular disease within the LGBTQ+ community, and HIV treatment initiatives in Ghana. A $3.5 million project establishing a health equity training center in Buffalo – a crucial resource for studying health disparities – was also saved. The State University of New York (SUNY) stands to regain over $4.5 million in restored funding, protecting ongoing research and enabling vital community health programs.

Attorney General James didn’t hold back, calling the decision “a major victory” in protecting New Yorkers and the nation. “Today, we’ve restored millions of dollars in life-saving research funds, putting our country back on track in its fight against Alzheimer’s, cancer, and other devastating diseases,” she stated. “We will not allow this administration to discriminate against vulnerable communities and put politics ahead of people’s lives.”

James was joined in this legal fight by the Attorneys General of Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin. The NIH, the world’s largest public funder of medical research, is responsible for breakthroughs in vaccines, cancer treatments, and life-extending therapies for diseases like HIV and AIDS – all of which were put at risk by this brazen attempt to weaponize funding for ideological purposes. The fight to safeguard scientific integrity is far from over, but today, a clear line was drawn.
