SIOUX CITY, IA – A significant drug pipeline has been disrupted with the guilty plea of Ryan Hansen, 32, of Algona, Iowa. Hansen admitted in federal court September 6, 2013, to his central role in a methamphetamine conspiracy that flooded parts of Iowa with the deadly drug. The scope of the operation is substantial, involving at least 500 grams of pure methamphetamine.
According to court documents, Hansen’s involvement stretched from September 2012 through March 2013. The conspiracy wasn’t small-time; Hansen wasn’t just a user. He actively sourced methamphetamine – ounces at a time – from Minnesota, then transported it back across state lines for distribution within Iowa. The Mason City area was a key distribution point, according to his confession.
Law enforcement finally caught up with Hansen on March 16, 2013, during a routine traffic stop. A search of the vehicle revealed 14.76 grams of “ice” methamphetamine – pure, potent, and enough to send a clear message. Hansen confessed to making multiple trips to Minnesota to acquire the drug, admitting he was a direct link in the supply chain.
Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde successfully prosecuted the case, building it on evidence gathered by the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office and the meticulous work of the Iowa DCI Criminalistics Laboratory. These are the boots on the ground, the ones who put in the hours to bring down operations like this.
Hansen now awaits sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. A presentence report will be prepared to determine the full extent of his criminal history and the impact of his actions. He remains in the custody of the United States Marshal, a grim reminder that his days of dealing are over… for now.
The stakes are incredibly high. Hansen faces a mandatory minimum of 20 years in federal prison. The maximum? A life sentence. Add to that a potential $20,000,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and up to a lifetime of supervised release. This isn’t a slap on the wrist; this is a serious reckoning for a serious crime.
