Deported Honduran Back in Court: Immigration Violation
ERIE, Pa. – Mario Roberto Villatoro-Castro, 38, of Yoro, Honduras, is facing federal charges after a grand jury indictment revealed a blatant disregard for U.S. immigration law. The indictment, announced today by United States Attorney David J. Hickton, accuses Villatoro-Castro of illegally re-entering the country after being previously deported.
According to court documents, Villatoro-Castro was initially found to be unlawfully present in the United States on April 12, 2013. This wasn’t his first run-in with the law. He was previously ordered deported and physically removed from the U.S. on July 22, 2002, with the removal completed on August 8, 2002. Apparently, a prior deportation order wasn’t enough to keep him away.
The indictment alleges that Villatoro-Castro knowingly re-entered the United States without obtaining the necessary permission from either the Attorney General of the United States or the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. This isn’t a simple oversight; it’s a deliberate act with serious consequences.
If convicted, Villatoro-Castro faces a maximum total sentence of 2 years in prison, alongside a hefty fine of $250,000. However, the final sentence will be determined by Federal Sentencing Guidelines, taking into account the severity of the offense and any prior criminal history the defendant may have.
Assistant United States Attorney Christine A. Sanner is leading the prosecution in this case. The investigation, which led to the indictment, was a joint effort between the Kirtland Hills, Ohio Police Department and the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection – agencies working to enforce the nation’s borders and immigration laws.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Villatoro-Castro is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments as they unfold. This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with repeat immigration offenders.
