Samuel Campbell Gets 70 Months for Armed Bank Robbery

SAN FRANCISCO — Samuel Campbell, 26, of Lake County, is headed to federal prison for 70 months after pleading guilty to an armed bank robbery that terrorized employees and customers in Clearlake, California. The sentence, delivered Friday, October 28, 2016, by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, marks the end of a swift federal prosecution following a brazen daylight heist.

Prosecutors say Campbell drove to a Clearlake bank branch the morning of July 8, 2015, and stormed inside brandishing what appeared to be a handgun. He shouted commands at bank employees, demanded cash, and fled with $3,120 — $3,000 from the teller drawers and $120 taken directly from a customer caught in the chaos. The weapon was never confirmed as real, but the threat was enough to paralyze the room.

Campbell pleaded guilty on May 13, 2016, to one count of armed bank robbery under federal statutes 18 U.S.C. §§ 2113(a) and (d), admitting his role in the violent felony that triggered federal jurisdiction. The charge carries a mandatory minimum due to the use of a dangerous weapon, sealing Campbell’s fate the moment he entered the bank with a firearm in hand.

In addition to his 70-month prison term, Judge Illston slapped Campbell with a 5-year mandatory supervised release period upon his eventual release. He’s also on the hook for full restitution: $3,137 to be paid back to the victims of his crime. Campbell remains in federal custody and will begin serving his sentence immediately, with no chance for early release.

The FBI and Clearlake Police Department联合 investigated the robbery, with federal agents moving fast to identify and apprehend Campbell through surveillance footage, vehicle tracking, and witness statements. Authorities say the cooperation between local and federal law enforcement was key to cracking the case within weeks of the incident.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Philip Kopczynski handled the prosecution, assisted by MK Swartsfager. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and FBI reiterated their commitment to pursuing violent federal crimes in Northern California, especially those that endanger public safety in small communities like Clearlake.
