Daniel N. Hallingshead, a 21-year-old from Sandusky, was arrested today and charged in federal court with trafficking massive quantities of heroin and cocaine across Erie County. The indictment unsealed this morning alleges Hallingshead conspired to possess with intent to distribute at least one kilogram of heroin and at least 500 grams of cocaine—a case built over months of surveillance and informant cooperation.
According to court documents, Hallingshead and an unnamed network of accomplices operated a sprawling drug operation out of multiple houses in the Sandusky area. From at least October 2015 through this week, the group allegedly flooded neighborhoods with heroin and cocaine, turning residential homes into de facto drug distribution hubs. Law enforcement sources say the operation was active around the clock, catering to a steady stream of users and lower-level dealers.
The takedown came after a sweeping investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Sandusky Police Department, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Perkins Township Police Department, and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. Wiretaps, controlled buys, and physical surveillance culminated in Hallingshead’s arrest at a residence on West Jefferson Street, where agents reportedly seized drug packaging materials, scales, and large amounts of cash.
Prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alissa M. Sterling and Duncan Brown, who are pushing for maximum accountability under federal sentencing guidelines. If convicted, Hallingshead faces a mandatory minimum sentence and could be sentenced to life in prison, depending on the court’s assessment of his criminal history, role in the conspiracy, and the severity of the violations.
Authorities stress that a charge is not evidence of guilt. Hallingshead is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. His defense team has not yet released a public statement, and his initial appearance is scheduled for Thursday in U.S. District Court in Toledo.
The investigation remains active, with law enforcement officials indicating more arrests may follow as they dismantle the broader network. Tipsters are urged to contact the DEA’s Sandusky field office with any information related to ongoing drug activity in the region.
