Shawn Keathley Sentenced in Hurricane Meth Deal

Shawn Keathley, 26, of Hurricane, West Virginia, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to two years for distributing methamphetamine, marking another conviction in the government’s relentless push against synthetic drug networks in central Appalachia.

Keathley pleaded guilty to a single count of meth distribution and admitted in court that on March 20, 2014, he sold the drug to a confidential informant in the parking lot of a Cross Lanes restaurant. The hand-to-hand exchange, monitored by law enforcement, was part of a broader sting targeting underground meth suppliers operating near the I-64 corridor.

Court records show Keathley distributed methamphetamine for approximately five months across Kanawha County, fueling addiction and instability in neighborhoods already strained by poverty and substance abuse. His arrest was the result of a coordinated investigation by the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team and the West Virginia State Police.

Assistant United States Attorney John J. Frail prosecuted the case, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to dismantling small-scale but persistent drug operations. U.S. District Judge Thomas E. Johnston handed down the sentence, emphasizing the need for accountability in drug-related crimes that erode community safety.

This prosecution falls under the Southern District of West Virginia’s ongoing anti-drug initiative led by United States Attorney Carol Casto. The effort unites federal, state, and local agencies to shut down illicit drug markets, with a sharpened focus on methamphetamine and prescription pill trafficking.

Authorities warn that despite the conviction, underground meth networks remain active. Law enforcement continues to monitor leads and urges public cooperation in reporting suspicious activity that could lead to more arrests. Keathley’s prison term will be followed by supervised release, the conditions of which include mandatory drug testing and counseling.
