Tristan Shaw Sentenced to 5 Years for Child Porn Charges

Tristan Shaw, a 31-year-old man from Granville, New York, is headed to federal prison for five years after being convicted of receiving child pornography through a peer-to-peer file-sharing network.

U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and James C. Spero, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Buffalo Field Office, announced the sentencing today in Albany. Shaw pleaded guilty on August 9 to one count of receiving child pornography, admitting he downloaded approximately 200 illicit image files between November 26, 2009, and November 26, 2013.

Using internet-based file-sharing software, Shaw deliberately accessed and saved disturbing content depicting the sexual exploitation of minors. Federal investigators traced the digital footprint to his home in Washington County, where evidence confirmed repeated downloads over a four-year span.

Sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Gary L. Sharpe, Shaw will serve a 25-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison. The harsh post-incarceration monitoring reflects the severity of the crime and the need for ongoing oversight.

As a convicted sex offender, Shaw will be required to register under federal and state laws, ensuring his status is publicly documented and monitored for the rest of his life. The case underscores the persistent federal crackdown on online exploitation of children.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, with prosecution handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Belliss. Authorities emphasize that digital crimes like these leave a permanent trail—and federal agents are equipped to follow it straight to the source.
