Quentin Cephus, 30, of Tampa, Florida, pleaded guilty today to forcibly assaulting and inflicting bodily injury on a federal officer — a violent attack that unfolded inside a government-run residential reentry center.
The assault occurred on February 9, 2016, at the Hillsborough County Residential Reentry Center, where Cephus was living as a program participant. According to court documents, he approached a U.S. Bureau of Prisons (BOP) official who was conducting a routine audit. Without warning, Cephus punched the agent in the face with a closed fist, striking hard enough to cause bodily injury.
But the violence didn’t stop there. Moments after the punch, Cephus spat directly in the federal employee’s face — an act prosecutors say was intended to humiliate and intimidate a federal worker carrying out official duties.
The attacked officer, whose identity has not been publicly released, was not armed at the time and was conducting administrative work when Cephus launched his unprovoked assault. The FBI took over the investigation, treating the attack on a federal agent as a serious federal crime.
Cephus now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. No sentencing date has been set. He remains in federal custody pending further court proceedings.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Kaitlin R. O’Donnell and Mandy Riedel. U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III, confirmed the guilty plea, underscoring that assaults on federal personnel will be met with the full weight of the justice system.
