John D. Fraser, a/k/a ‘John Knight,’ 54, of Nova Scotia, Canada, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Bangor, Maine, to attempting to enter the United States after having been ordered removed—a crime exposing the cracks in border enforcement and the audacity of repeat offenders.
On November 20, 2016, Fraser rolled up to the Calais, Maine port of entry behind the wheel of a vehicle with Florida plates, flashing a Canadian passport under the alias John Knight. He claimed he was headed to his winter home in Port St. Lucie, Florida—a story that unraveled the moment U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents pulled him aside for secondary inspection.
Under questioning, Fraser first denied any prior U.S. residency. Then, the truth spilled out: he admitted to living and working in the United States unlawfully for more than three decades. A fingerprint check confirmed what CBP feared—he wasn’t just undocumented. He was a deported felon.
The records revealed a criminal history under his real name, John D. Fraser, and a formal removal order issued in 2010 that barred him from reentering the country. Despite that, he tried to slip back in, relying on an alias and a fabricated story about seasonal residency.
The investigation, conducted entirely by CBP, underscores the persistent challenge of identifying individuals who exploit identity gaps and weak cross-border data sharing. Fraser’s case is not an anomaly—it’s a symptom of a system too often outmaneuvered by those who treat immigration law like a suggestion.
Assistant United States Attorney F. Todd Lowell prosecuted the case. Fraser now faces federal penalties for attempting to reenter the U.S. after deportation, a conviction that could land him behind bars and permanently seal his fate as a man who gambled with the law—and lost.
