LOWER BRULE, SD – James St. Cloud, 36, of Lower Brule, South Dakota, is facing the full weight of federal law after being indicted on charges of Aggravated Sexual Abuse and Sexual Abuse. The indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury on January 19, 2017, details disturbing allegations of predatory behavior targeting vulnerable victims.
According to court documents, St. Cloud allegedly engaged in and attempted to engage in sexual behavior with two minor victims between March 30, 2016, and April 16, 2016, and again on September 16, 2016. The indictment chillingly notes that one of the victims was incapable of understanding the nature of the acts, and physically unable to resist or communicate unwillingness.
United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the indictment, emphasizing the seriousness of the accusations. St. Cloud appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 2, 2017, entering a plea of not guilty. He is currently remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting trial.
If convicted, St. Cloud faces a potentially life-altering sentence. The maximum penalty includes up to life in federal custody, a $500,000 fine, and a lifetime of supervised release. He could also be ordered to pay restitution to the victims and a $200 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. This isn’t about fines; it’s about accountability for unspeakable acts.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, highlighting the agency’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case, and will be tasked with proving the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
It’s crucial to remember that these are merely allegations at this stage. St. Cloud is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the nature of these charges demands a rigorous and thorough legal process. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments as they unfold.
