Gregory Magee, 47, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is staring down federal prison time after being indicted on six counts of armed bank robbery and bank robbery tied to a crime spree that spanned four counties in 2016. The indictment, returned February 7 by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh, lays bare a calculated string of daylight heists that netted Magee more than $119,000 from financial institutions across western Pennsylvania.
The first robbery struck on January 20, 2016, when Magee allegedly walked into the First Niagara Bank in Cranberry Township, brandished a weapon, and walked out with $5,526. Just over a month later, on February 29, he hit First Merit Bank in New Castle, Pennsylvania, escaping with $10,126. The pattern intensified: on March 31, he robbed another First Niagara branch in McMurray of $9,133, escalating to a brazen midday smash at First Commonwealth Bank on Pittsburgh’s Forbes Avenue on June 8, where he took $3,709.
By August 11, Magee had moved west to Beaver Falls, where he entered Citizens Bank on Constitution Boulevard and stole $12,559. But the largest single score came on November 8, when he allegedly robbed S&T Bank in Monroeville of $78,643—the biggest haul of the spree and nearly two-thirds of his total take. Each robbery was conducted under threat, with witnesses reporting Magee displaying a firearm during at least some of the incidents.
Federal prosecutors are treating the case with maximum severity. Armed bank robbery carries a potential 25-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine per count. Standard bank robbery charges allow up to 20 years behind bars and the same fine. If convicted on all counts, Magee could face a cumulative sentence stretching well beyond half a lifetime, though the actual time served will depend on federal sentencing guidelines and any prior criminal record.
Assistant United States Attorney Conor Lamb is leading the prosecution, coordinating with a multi-agency task force that included the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, and local police from Monroeville, Chippewa Township, and Peters Township. The investigation relied heavily on surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic tracing of stolen cash—pieces that gradually closed in on Magee as a suspect.
An indictment is not a conviction. Gregory Magee is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But the breadth and consistency of the charges suggest federal authorities believe they’ve caught a serial bank robber who preyed on Pennsylvania’s financial institutions with cold precision. The case remains pending.
