PITTSBURGH, PA – A Pittsburgh man learned his fate today, sentenced to three years in federal prison for a racially motivated assault at the Wood Street T-Station in downtown Pittsburgh. Ryan Kyle, 23, of Baldwin Borough, pleaded guilty to violating the Hate Crimes Prevention Act and received the sentence from United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon.
The incident unfolded on May 30, 2015, following a Kenny Chesney concert at Heinz Field. According to court documents, Kyle willfully caused bodily injury to K.L., a 53-year-old African-American man, fueled by racial animus. The brutal attack wasn’t a random act of violence; it was a calculated assault based on K.L.’s race, color, and national origin.
Evidence presented to the court – including damning footage from Port Authority video surveillance – would have established, had the case gone to trial, that Kyle specifically targeted K.L. due to his perceived race and color. The attack, caught on camera, paints a grim picture of premeditated hatred. This wasn’t a bar fight gone wrong; it was a hate crime in the heart of Pittsburgh.
The 36-month sentence will run concurrently with a term of imprisonment Kyle is already serving from Criminal No. 9241 of 2015. Kyle received credit for time already served in state custody – from February 16, 2016, to April 20, 2016 – before being transferred to federal custody. Following his prison term, Kyle will face three years of supervised release.
Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song announced the sentencing, stating the case underscores the Department of Justice’s commitment to vigorously prosecuting hate crimes. Assistant United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung led the prosecution. The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Port Authority Police Department, who worked tirelessly to bring Kyle to justice.
This case serves as a stark reminder that hate-fueled violence has no place in our society. While a sentence has been handed down, the scars of this attack will likely remain with K.L. for years to come. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments during Kyle’s supervised release.
