Favreau Gets 5+ Years in Maine Cocaine Case

PORTLAND, MAINE – Derrick Favreau, 33, of Auburn, Maine, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 63 months for possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Chief Judge Nancy Torresen delivered the sentence today in U.S. District Court, along with a $5,000 fine and three years of supervised release. The case, stretching back to 2014, highlights the persistent flow of narcotics through Maine and the coordinated efforts to bring traffickers to justice.

The investigation began in May 2014 when law enforcement officers discovered distributable amounts of cocaine cleverly hidden within a secret compartment of Favreau’s vehicle. This initial seizure was just the tip of the iceberg. Authorities didn’t stop there.

Further investigation led to the discovery of a significant amount of cash linked to the drug operation. A subsequent search revealed $19,000 stashed in a hidden compartment of another vehicle operated by Favreau. Days later, a search warrant execution turned up another $10,000, cementing the evidence of a substantial trafficking enterprise. Favreau initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea on July 26, 2016.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David Joyce prosecuted the case, relentlessly building a case based on the physical evidence and meticulous investigative work. The government successfully demonstrated Favreau’s intent to distribute the cocaine, securing the conviction and subsequent lengthy prison sentence. Joyce could be reached for comment at (207) 780-3257.

This wasn’t a solo operation. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) led the investigation, working in close coordination with the Maine State Police, the Lewiston and Auburn Police Departments, and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. The multi-agency collaboration underscores the commitment to tackling drug trafficking at all levels.

While 63 months represents a significant penalty, it remains to be seen if it will deter others from engaging in similar criminal activity. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor Favreau’s case and report on future developments. The flow of illicit drugs into Maine continues, and law enforcement remains vigilant in their efforts to stem the tide.
