A brazen bank heist in broad daylight has finally been brought to justice, as 60-year-old Donald Myer of Newark, New Jersey, admitted to robbing a Valley National bank in Belleville, New Jersey, in April 2016.
Myer pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares in Newark federal court to an information charging him with one count of bank robbery, Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, Myer admitted that during the robbery, he passed a note to a bank employee wherein he threatened to use a gun while demanding money from the bank employees. The bank robbery charge to which Myer pleaded guilty carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for June 27, 2017, leaving Myer to face the music for his daring crime.
Acting U.S. Attorney Fitzpatrick credited special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Timothy Gallagher in Newark, with the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea. He also thanked the Belleville, Kearny, and Port Authority police departments for their contributions to the case, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in solving complex crimes.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Veronica Allende of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Trenton, while Myer is being defended by Linda D. Foster Esq., Assistant Federal Public Defender. As the case moves forward, the people of New Jersey can rest assured that justice is being served.
In a city plagued by violent crime, Myer’s guilty plea serves as a reminder that law enforcement is committed to keeping communities safe.
