COLUMBIA, SC – Zakaryia Abdin, 18, of Ladson, South Carolina, is facing serious federal charges after a swift takedown by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). Abdin was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in Columbia and arrested Thursday evening, March 30, 2017, as he attempted to board an outbound flight at Charleston International Airport. The charge? Attempting to provide material support to ISIS, the brutal terrorist organization wreaking havoc across the globe.
According to the indictment, Abdin allegedly planned to travel overseas to physically join ISIS. Federal agents moved in before he could leave the country, intercepting him at the airport. This wasn’t some idle online chatter; authorities believe Abdin was actively taking steps to become a foot soldier for a designated foreign terrorist organization. The specifics of his planned travel and connections remain under seal, but the JTTF clearly considered the threat credible enough to intervene.
United States Attorney Beth Drake for the District of South Carolina and Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Mary B. McCord announced the arrest Friday, sending a clear message that attempts to aid terrorist groups will not be tolerated. “We will vigorously prosecute those who seek to support ISIS or other foreign terrorist organizations,” Drake stated. The investigation, led by the FBI-JTTF, highlights the ongoing concern of homegrown extremism within the United States.
Abdin made his initial appearance in United States District Court on Friday, March 31st. He’s currently presumed innocent, as all defendants are, until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the charges against him are significant and carry a potentially lengthy prison sentence if convicted. The legal process is now underway, and the government will present its evidence in court.
Arraignment is scheduled for this Wednesday, April 5th, at 1:30 PM at the United States Courthouse in Charleston, South Carolina, located at 85 Broad Street. The courtroom will likely be packed, as the case draws considerable public and media attention. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Kittrell of the District of South Carolina and Trial Attorney Jennifer Burke of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are handling the prosecution, signaling the seriousness with which the Department of Justice is approaching this case.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by ISIS and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to disrupt their operations and prevent individuals from joining their ranks. The FBI-JTTF continues to monitor potential threats and work tirelessly to protect the nation from terrorism. Lance Crick (864) 282-2105 is the contact person for further inquiries.
