Shavertown Clerk Admits Stealing $4,600 From Dallas Post Office

SCRANTON, PA – Carol Sosik, 55, of Shavertown, Luzerne County, has confessed to pilfering funds from the U.S. Post Office in Dallas, Pennsylvania. The guilty plea, entered on April 17, 2017, before United States District Judge Robert D. Mariani, confirms a two-year scheme to siphon money from the system.

According to U.S. Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Sosik, a distribution window clerk at the Dallas Post Office, abused her position to embezzle approximately $4,600 between June 2014 and May 2016. Her duties included the sale of postage stamps, giving her direct access to cash and accounting for transactions.

The U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, conducted the investigation that brought Sosik’s scheme to light. Postal inspectors painstakingly traced the missing funds, ultimately building a case that led to her admission of guilt. The details of how Sosik concealed the theft remain largely undisclosed at this time.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. O’Hara is prosecuting the case, and will argue for a fitting sentence when Sosik appears before Judge Mariani in Scranton. While a sentencing date has not yet been set, Sosik faces a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, followed by a term of supervised release and a hefty fine.

However, the actual sentence will be determined by Judge Mariani after careful consideration of federal sentencing statutes and guidelines. These guidelines take into account the severity of the offense, Sosik’s criminal history, and her personal characteristics. The statutory maximum is not a guarantee of what she will receive.

This case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly low-level positions of trust can be exploited for personal gain. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the final sentencing of Carol Sosik. The public deserves to know when those entrusted with handling public funds betray that trust.
