Mission Five Face Federal Firearms Charges

MISSION, SD – A federal grand jury has slapped indictments on five individuals from Mission, South Dakota, alleging a slew of firearms violations. The charges include Possession of Unregistered Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm – a dangerous cocktail that could land them in federal prison for a decade.

United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the indictments, handed down on March 15, 2017. Keith Bordeaux, 19, Stephanie Bear Heels, 30, and Kevin Bordeaux, 18, all entered not guilty pleas before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 10, 2017. Dakota Marshall, a/k/a Dakota Marshall, Sr., 21, pleaded not guilty March 29, 2017, and Angelito Moran, a/k/a Angel Moran, 20, followed suit on April 21, 2017, also before Judge Moreno.

The feds allege that on November 11, 2016, Keith Bordeaux and Marshall knowingly possessed a Weatherby, model PA-08, 20-gauge shotgun – a sawed-off weapon measuring less than 18 inches – that wasn’t registered to either of them. Crucially, both Bordeaux and Marshall are already legally barred from owning firearms, making this possession even more serious.

The indictment doesn’t stop there. Keith and Kevin Bordeaux, alongside Moran and Bear Heels, are accused of a wider scheme involving stolen firearms. The charges state they knowingly possessed, received, concealed, stored, bartered, sold, and disposed of stolen guns, and actively aided each other in the process. Moran and Bear Heels, like Bordeaux and Marshall, are also prohibited persons when it comes to firearm ownership.

If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in custody, a hefty $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory $400 contribution to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution could also be ordered, meaning they could be forced to pay back anyone harmed by their alleged actions.

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services spearheaded the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges handling the prosecution. All five defendants are currently being held by the U.S. Marshals Service pending their trial, which is scheduled to begin on June 27, 2017. It’s important to remember these are just accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
