BUFFALO, N.Y. – Guy Lightfoot, 59, of Buffalo, is headed to federal prison for two years after being sentenced on a gun charge, Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced today. Lightfoot, a convicted felon, was found with a cache of firearms and ammunition, a clear violation of federal law.
U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara handed down the 24-month sentence after Lightfoot was convicted of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. The bust went down January 12, 2012, when Niagara Falls Police raided Lightfoot’s residence at 1953 Falls Street. Cops recovered two firearms and a stash of ammunition during the search. But that wasn’t all.
The operation took a wild turn when co-defendant Jerry Brown, attempted to flee, leading officers on a high-speed chase. Brown ultimately ditched the vehicle in the middle of the road and, in a desperate attempt to evade capture, tossed another firearm onto a rooftop. Lightfoot later admitted to handing that third firearm to Brown right before the police moved in.
Lightfoot’s criminal history played a key role in the sentencing. He was previously convicted of Forgery in the First Degree in the State of Georgia, a conviction that permanently bars him from legally owning a firearm. The feds weren’t messing around with this repeat offender. Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Higgins prosecuted the case, building a solid case against Lightfoot.
Meanwhile, charges are still pending against Jerry Brown, the man who took the chase to the streets. It’s important to remember that an indictment is just an accusation, and Brown, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This case was a joint effort between the Niagara Falls Police Department, led by Chief Bryan DalPorto, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge James C. Spero.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow the case against Jerry Brown and report any further developments. This conviction sends a clear message: those who illegally possess firearms while already burdened by a criminal record will face the full weight of the law.
