Tengiz Sydykov, Eldar Rezvanov Arrested in Gun Smuggling Ring

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Federal authorities have cracked a covert weapons pipeline stretching from Northern Virginia to Chechnya, arresting two Kyrgyzstan nationals accused of trafficking over 100 disassembled firearms overseas without a license. Tengiz Sydykov, 28, and Eldar Rezvanov, 27, both Alexandria residents, were taken into custody today on charges including international firearm trafficking, smuggling, wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.

According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, Sydykov and Rezvanov systematically purchased firearms across Virginia, disassembled them, and prepared them for overseas shipment. They allegedly disguised the weapon parts as kitchen utensils and falsified shipping documents to bypass U.S. export controls. The intended destination: Chechnya, a volatile Russian republic with a history of militant insurgency and armed conflict.

The men are charged with violating the Arms Export Control Act, Conspiracy to Smuggle Goods from the United States, Wire Fraud, Bank Fraud, and Money Laundering. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. While federal sentences often fall below the maximum, prosecutors emphasize the seriousness of arming conflict zones with American-made firepower.

“This was not a minor paperwork violation,” said Tracy Doherty-McCormick, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “These defendants allegedly turned Alexandria into a launchpad for shipping weapons to a global hotspot. That’s a national security threat, plain and simple.”

The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald L. Walutes, Jr. and Senior Trial Attorney Heather Schmidt of the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section. HSI Washington, D.C., led the investigation under Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Lechleitner, with support from the Department of Justice’s National Security Division.

The criminal complaint, filed under Case No. 1:18-mj-91, 92, remains pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. As with all federal cases, Sydykov and Rezvanov are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Court records and related documents are available via PACER and the Eastern District’s public docket system.
