Akron Man Indicted for Fentanyl, Heroin, Meth Trafficking

Dontez Yeager, a 33-year-old Akron man, was hit with federal charges after being caught possessing a lethal cocktail of fentanyl, heroin and more than 50 grams of methamphetamine, according to a Jan. 15 indictment filed by U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman.

The indictment alleges Yeager was armed with a mixture of heroin and fentanyl—two opioids responsible for thousands of overdose deaths—and a substantial quantity of methamphetamine, signaling a clear intent to distribute, not use. Authorities made the discovery during an investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Yeager now faces a steep legal battle as prosecutors push for a conviction on federal drug trafficking charges. Possession with intent to distribute carries severe penalties, especially when quantities exceed thresholds like the 50 grams of meth in this case, which can trigger mandatory minimums.

If convicted, the court will weigh multiple factors before sentencing, including Yeager’s role in the offense, any prior criminal history, and the nature of the violations. While the sentence will not surpass the statutory maximum, federal guidelines mean even first-time offenders can face years behind bars.

The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason M. Katz, who is building the government’s case under the framework of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio. The DEA’s investigation laid the groundwork for the indictment, underscoring ongoing federal efforts to crack down on opioid and stimulant distribution in high-risk zones.

An indictment is not a conviction. Yeager is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. His trial will determine whether the government can link him directly to the intent to distribute these dangerous narcotics.
