Ramiro Martinez-Ramirez Charged with Illegal Reentry After Deportation

RAMIRO MARTINEZ-RAMIREZ, a 43-year-old citizen of Mexico, is back in federal crosshairs — charged with illegally reentering the United States after prior deportation, according to a one-count indictment unsealed today in Louisiana.

The indictment, filed under Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a), alleges that on February 16, 2018, MARTINEZ-RAMIREZ crossed into the country without authorization following his lawful removal. U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans confirmed the charge, underscoring the ongoing federal crackdown on repeat immigration violations in the Eastern District.

If convicted, MARTINEZ-RAMIREZ faces a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and as much as three years of supervised release following incarceration. Federal prosecutors are treating the case as a serious breach of immigration law, not a mere border infraction.

Assistant United States Attorney Chandra Menon is leading the prosecution. The investigation was handled by U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement — agencies that have intensified operations targeting deported nationals who reenter the country illegally.

U.S. Attorney Evans emphasized that the indictment is not a finding of guilt. “The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” Evans stated, repeating the foundational principle of the federal justice system even in cases with clear immigration paper trails.

MARTINEZ-RAMIREZ remains in custody as federal authorities move forward with proceedings. The case adds to a growing docket of illegal reentry prosecutions in Louisiana, where federal courts continue to prioritize immigration enforcement as part of broader border security efforts.
