Vernon Poleahla Sentenced

Vernon Poleahla, 34, of Zuni, N.M., was sentenced to 79 months in prison for his role in a violent incident that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

The sentencing, which took place in federal court, was the result of Poleahla’s guilty plea to charges of involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country.

According to Poleahla’s plea agreement, the incident occurred on April 27, 2018, following an argument. Poleahla choked the first victim and stabbed him in the neck, causing serious bodily injury. When the second victim intervened to assist the first victim, Poleahla stabbed him in the stomach, resulting in his death.

Poleahla, an enrolled member of Zuni Pueblo, pleaded guilty to these offenses on September 26, 2018. The case was investigated by the Gallup office of the FBI, with assistance from the Zuni Police Department.
