United States Attorney Erica H. MacDonald today announced the guilty plea of VINCENT TOGBE KONNEY, 62, to making a false bomb threat against the iconic Mall of America.
In a shocking turn of events, Konney pleaded guilty before Judge Nancy E. Brasel in U.S. District Court in St. Paul, Minnesota. According to his plea and court documents, Konney concocted a tale of terror when he falsely accused his wife of plotting to bomb the mall, writing a letter to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service.
The letter was a deliberate act of retaliation against his wife, who was in the midst of the naturalization process. Claiming to have overheard a conversation on a bus about the supposed plot, Konney enclosed a photocopy of his wife’s Permanent Resident Card as evidence and demanded her deportation to halt the “terrorist threat”.
What started as a personal vendetta ended in a federal investigation by the FBI. Assistant United States Attorney John Docherty is now prosecuting this despicable case.
KONNEY, from Richfield, Minnesota, faces one count of making a false bomb threat. The grimy details of his scheme have once again highlighted the serious consequences of such malicious acts.
