Fresno Felon Jesus Lepe Cuffed Twice with Stolen Guns

Fresno felon Jesus Lepe, 44, is back in the federal crosshairs — charged with two counts of unlawfully possessing stolen firearms, the DOJ announced today. The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury, stems from two separate traffic stops where Lepe was caught red-handed with illegal guns.

On September 16, 2020, Lepe ran a red light and nearly caused a multi-vehicle crash. Fresno County deputies pulled him over and discovered a stolen firearm stashed in his vehicle. That bust should’ve been a wake-up call. It wasn’t. On August 18, 2021, state patrol stopped Lepe for speeding — and once again, found him in possession of another stolen firearm.

Lepe is legally barred from owning or carrying any weapon. His rap sheet dates back to 1996, when he racked up felony convictions for robbery, possession of heroin, and prior firearms violations. Despite that history, he’s repeatedly ignored court orders and public safety, choosing instead to roll armed through the streets of Fresno.

The case was built through joint efforts by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Antonio J. Pataca is leading the prosecution, aiming to keep Lepe off the streets under federal penalties that hit hard.

If convicted, Lepe faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine per count. Sentencing would be determined by the court, weighing the Federal Sentencing Guidelines and statutory factors. For now, he’s presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt — but the pattern speaks volumes.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the Justice Department’s hammer against violent crime. PSN targets repeat offenders like Lepe, combining law enforcement pressure with local prevention programs to choke off violence at the source. In Fresno, where gun crimes plague neighborhoods, cases like this are front and center in the federal crackdown.
