WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – Another dealer caught pushing poison into our communities. Richard Lee Edgell, 32, of Belmont, Ohio, finally admitted his guilt today, pleading to one count of “Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.” The bust, a grim reminder of the relentless flow of drugs across state lines, landed Edgell in federal court and staring down a lengthy prison term.
According to United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, Edgell was moving serious weight. The crime occurred in January 2021, right here in Ohio County. A search of Edgell’s vehicle turned up a staggering 191 grams of methamphetamine – “ice,” as the street calls it – alongside 89 grams of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid fueling the overdose crisis. That’s enough to kill a lot of people.
But it wasn’t just the drugs that authorities seized. Law enforcement also recovered $12,380.00 in cash, the dirty money Edgell earned peddling misery. He’s agreed to forfeit the funds, a small victory in dismantling his operation, but hardly enough to compensate for the damage he’s inflicted. It’s a stark illustration of the profit motive driving this deadly trade.
Edgell now faces up to 20 years behind bars and a potential fine of up to $1,000,000. Don’t expect a slap on the wrist. The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will factor in the severity of the offenses and any prior criminal history. This isn’t his first rodeo, and the judge will know it.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn M. Adkins is handling the prosecution, determined to see justice served. The investigation was led by the Ohio Valley Drug Task Force, a HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) funded initiative, proving that coordinated efforts are crucial in combating this epidemic. These task forces are the thin blue line against a rising tide of narcotics.
U.S. Magistrate Judge James P. Mazzone presided over the guilty plea. Edgell’s sentencing date has not yet been set, but one thing is certain: he’ll have plenty of time to reflect on his choices while locked away. This case serves as a warning – deal drugs in this district, and you *will* be caught, prosecuted, and punished to the full extent of the law.
