Fresno, CA — Jesus Lepe, 44, is back in the crosshairs of federal prosecutors, charged with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm after separate traffic stops turned up stolen weapons. A federal grand jury handed down the indictment this week, signaling another strike against repeat violent offenders under the DOJ’s crackdown on illegal guns.
On September 16, 2020, Lepe ran a red light and nearly caused a multi-vehicle crash. When deputies pulled him over, they found a stolen firearm stashed in his vehicle. It should’ve been a wake-up call. Instead, Lepe doubled down. Just under a year later, on August 18, 2021, he was caught speeding — and again, cops discovered a stolen firearm in his possession.
Lepe isn’t just a casual offender. He’s a documented felon with convictions dating back to 1996, including robbery, possession of heroin, and prior firearms violations. That record legally bars him from owning or carrying any gun, yet he’s now accused of doing so twice in less than a year — brazenly toting loaded weapons on public roads.
The case was built through a joint investigation by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Antonio J. Pataca is leading the prosecution, aiming to lock Lepe away under federal sentencing statutes that don’t look kindly on repeat gun offenders.
If convicted on both counts, Lepe faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. While the court will weigh statutory factors and sentencing guidelines, the message is clear: illegal firearms in the hands of violent felons won’t be tolerated. For now, Lepe remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the Justice Department’s signature initiative to dismantle cycles of violent crime. By targeting high-risk offenders like Lepe and partnering with local enforcement and reentry programs, PSN aims to reduce gun violence at the street level — one indictment at a time.
