A 44-year-old Canton man is headed to federal prison for more than six years after admitting to trafficking large quantities of cocaine in central Mississippi. Alton Terrell Monroe was sentenced to 75 months behind bars, marking the latest conviction in a sweeping crackdown on drug networks in the region.
Monroe pleaded guilty on July 30, 2021, to possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, a charge that exposed the depth of his involvement in a multi-agency-targeted drug ring. The case, announced by U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca and DEA Special Agent in Charge Brad L. Byerley, highlights the federal government’s relentless pursuit of high-level traffickers.
According to court records, the investigation began in 2017 when DEA agents launched a wide-reaching probe into suspected traffickers operating across central Mississippi. The months-long operation led to the seizure of approximately $585,000 in illicit cash and 12 kilograms of cocaine—quantities that signal organized, profit-driven distribution.
Multiple law enforcement agencies converged to dismantle the network, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the U.S. Marshals Service; the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office; the Jackson Police Department; the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics; and the Internal Revenue Service. Their combined efforts reflect the layered threat posed by drug trafficking organizations.
The prosecution was handled as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) initiative, a federal strategy aimed at dismantling major criminal enterprises through intelligence-led, multi-jurisdictional cooperation. OCDETF leverages federal, state, and local resources to target kingpins, not just street-level dealers.
Assistant United States Attorneys Keesha Middleton and Chris Wansley led the prosecution, securing a sentence that underscores the severity of Monroe’s role. The case remains a stark reminder: in Mississippi’s underground drug economy, the feds are watching—and they’re closing in.
