Helena Pawn Shop Operator Admits Gunrunning Scheme

GREAT FALLS, MT – Isaiah Maurice Morsette, 38, of Boulder, Montana, is facing a decade behind bars after admitting to federal firearms crimes connected to illegal gun sales at Modern Pawn & Consignment in Helena. U.S. Attorney Leif M. Johnson announced the guilty plea today, detailing a brazen scheme to circumvent federal gun laws.

Morsette pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and making false statements during a firearms transaction. The charges stem from an undercover operation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) earlier this year. Morsette, despite being a five-time convicted felon – including a 2011 conviction for felony sexual intercourse without consent – was actively handling firearms at the pawn shop owned by his wife, Catherine Suzanne Morsette.

According to court documents, Morsette served as the “firearms and ammunition expert” at Modern Pawn, handling all aspects of gun sales. The ATF investigation revealed Morsette wasn’t just knowledgeable about firearms; he was actively facilitating illegal purchases. In March, he promised an undercover agent two Smith & Wesson 9mm pistols within days. A month later, he orchestrated a clear straw purchase, handing a Savage 6.5 Creedmoor rifle directly to one agent while instructing another – who lacked a Montana address – to proceed with the paperwork anyway.

The damning evidence doesn’t stop there. When questioned about the legitimacy of the purchase, Morsette allegedly displayed a shocking disregard for the law, stating, “there’s all these crazy rules, but I don’t give a [profanity], I was to sell it, you know what I mean?” He then knowingly completed an ATF form falsely identifying the actual purchaser of the rifle, enabling the illegal transfer. He even provided the buyer with ammunition while waiting for the second agent to arrive.

Catherine Suzanne Morsette has also pleaded guilty to crimes related to the case and is awaiting sentencing. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over Isaiah Morsette’s guilty plea and has scheduled sentencing for March 30, 2022. Morsette remains detained pending further proceedings. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.

The ATF investigation continues to unravel the full extent of the illegal activity at Modern Pawn & Consignment. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who profit from illegal gun sales – and disregard the law – will be held accountable, regardless of their position or connections.
