MAPLE HEIGHTS, OHIO – A hard-hitting guilty plea has been made by Timothy Goodner, 20, of Maple Heights, Ohio, in federal court today for his involvement in the May 30, 2020, demonstrations that turned violent in downtown Cleveland.
The U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Brennan announced that Goodner admitted to conspiracy to commit arson during the chaotic events. Court documents reveal a frightening scene: an individual ignited a roll of paper towels and cardboard boxes aimed at torching the Shaia & PPR parking booth on West 3rd Street.
While the flames were expected, Goodner’s role was more sinister. He accepted a cardboard box from another suspect, placing it inside the booth before adding more fuel to the fire with additional cardboard boxes. The calculated act set the stage for potential destruction.
Goodner’s identity was uncovered post-demonstrations when the Cleveland Division of Police released images and videos to the media. His face became a stark reminder of the criminal acts amidst the protests, identified through numerous anonymous tips.
The sentence has yet to be determined, with a federal district court judge considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors before handing down a verdict.
This case was a joint effort by the ATF and the Cleveland Division of Police, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly L. Galvin. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio extends gratitude to the FBI, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol for their collaborative efforts.
