Council Bluffs, IA – A grim tale of gun law defiance comes to a close as Garret Allen Horgdal, 39, from Henderson, faces the music for his flagrant disregard of firearm regulations. Sentenced on January 31st, Horgdal will serve an 84-month prison term followed by three years of supervised release.
The offense? Being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy who apprehended Horgdal on March 8, 2022, found him with not one, but three loaded firearms. A chilling detail: Horgdal was barred from owning guns due to his prior felony convictions and drug use.
Horgdal’s lawyer entered a guilty plea, acknowledging the gravity of his client’s actions. The judge emphasized that Horgdal’s crime was far more than a mere mistake; it was a deliberate act of defiance against the law designed to protect public safety.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa spearheaded the announcement, emphasizing that such sentences are necessary to uphold the rule of law and deter future crimes.
The investigation, a collaborative effort among the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Mills County Sheriff’s Department, and Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, underscores the commitment to eradicating gun violence. Horgdal’s sentence is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that seeks to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for all.
Project Safe Neighborhoods stands on four pillars: fostering trust in communities, supporting organizations aimed at preventing violence, strategic law enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes. The Department of Justice’s 2021 initiative is proof positive of the government’s dedication to combatting violent crime effectively.
