BECKLEY, W.Va. – Jamie Vass, 45, of Beckley, is headed to federal prison for a decade after admitting to running a substantial methamphetamine operation out of her home. Vass was sentenced today to 10 years behind bars, followed by five years of supervised release, for distributing 5 grams or more of methamphetamine – a quantity that far exceeded what she initially peddled, according to court records.
The investigation began to unravel on February 7, 2022, when Vass sold approximately one ounce of methamphetamine to a confidential informant right at her Beckley residence. But that was just the start. Less than two months later, on March 27, 2022, she upped the ante, pushing roughly 47 grams of the drug to the same informant, again from her home. This wasn’t small-time dealing; it was a consistent flow of poison into the community.
Law enforcement didn’t wait long to act. On April 5, 2022, a search warrant was executed at Vass’ residence. The raid turned up not only more methamphetamine and fentanyl, but also a pair of firearms: a Ruger LC 9mm pistol and a Lorcin L22 .22-caliber pistol. Officers also seized $827 in cash – likely proceeds from her illicit trade. Vass, confronted with the evidence, confessed to selling approximately 4 ounces of methamphetamine every four days and roughly 7 grams of fentanyl each week, a steady stream of drugs from December 2021 until her arrest.
“This sentence sends a clear message,” stated United States Attorney Will Thompson. “Those who profit from poisoning our communities will be held accountable.” The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Beckley/Raleigh County Drug and Violent Crime Unit, demonstrating a coordinated push to dismantle drug operations in Southern West Virginia.
United States District Judge Frank W. Volk handed down the sentence, accepting the recommendations of Assistant United States Attorneys Andrew D. Isabell and Alex Hamner, who successfully prosecuted the case. The evidence presented painted a clear picture of a calculated and continuous criminal enterprise, leaving Judge Volk little choice but to impose a substantial prison term.
