A 22-year-old Jacksonville man has been caught in the act of selling firearms and machinegun conversion devices without a license, leaving the community shaken. Scott Randall Chance, Jr., pleaded guilty to dealing firearms without a license and knowingly possessing a machinegun.
Chance faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison for his crimes. A sentencing date has not yet been set, leaving many wondering when justice will be served.
According to the plea agreement, federal and local law enforcement agencies identified Chance as a source of supply for illegal firearms and machinegun conversion devices in Duval and St. Johns counties in October 2022. Over the next few months, Chance illegally sold firearms and machinegun conversion devices to an undercover law enforcement officer on four separate occasions.
The details of the case are disturbing. Chance sold six firearms and three machinegun conversion devices to the undercover officer between February and July 2023. The sale of these devices is a serious offense, putting countless lives at risk.
The investigation into Chance’s crimes was a collaborative effort involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Aakash Singh is leading the prosecution.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results. The initiative is a crucial step towards creating safer neighborhoods for everyone.
Chance’s guilty plea is a significant victory for law enforcement and the community. It serves as a reminder that those who engage in illegal activities will be held accountable. As the community looks towards a safer future, it’s essential to continue supporting efforts like Project Safe Neighborhoods.
