TAMPA, FL – Jermonte Jerome Thornton, 42, of Tampa, is facing a potential life sentence after being indicted on federal charges for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the indictment today, detailing a case that could land Thornton back in prison for the rest of his days.
The grand jury indictment alleges that on or about January 3, 2024, Thornton was found in possession of a Diamondback firearm and two rounds of ammunition. This isn’t his first rodeo with the law, or with firearms. Thornton’s prior record is extensive, riddled with felony convictions including previous charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, burglary of an occupied dwelling with assault or battery, and false imprisonment.
If convicted, Thornton faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison and a mandatory minimum of 15 years under the Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA). The ACCA significantly increases penalties for repeat offenders convicted of firearms crimes. Federal prosecutors have also signaled their intent to seize the Diamondback firearm and ammunition used in the alleged offense, adding insult to injury.
“This case demonstrates our commitment to keeping firearms out of the hands of individuals who have already proven they are a danger to the community,” a source within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) stated on background. The investigation was a joint effort between the ATF and the Tampa Police Department, highlighting the collaborative approach to tackling gun violence in the city.
The prosecution will be handled by Assistant United States Attorney Jeff Chang. It’s important to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Thornton is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, his extensive criminal history paints a grim picture, and the federal government appears determined to secure a substantial prison sentence.
This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through a comprehensive strategy that includes fostering community trust, supporting local organizations, and focused enforcement. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN initiative in May 2021, focusing on measurable results and long-term crime reduction.
