A brutal attack at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in 2018 has resulted in a 10-year prison sentence for Christopher Dewey Booker, 48, of Colorado. Booker used a Tomahawk hatchet to repeatedly strike and bludgeon a person, leaving the victim with severe injuries.
According to court documents, the assault occurred on September 7, 2018, and the victim sustained at least 22 injuries, including fractures, lacerations, partial detachment of his left hand, and partial facial paralysis. These injuries have resulted in the protracted loss and impairment of the victim’s jaw and permanent impairment of the victim’s left hand.
The investigation, led by the National Park Service, culminated in a federal grand jury indictment in May 2023. Booker pleaded guilty to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury in April 2024. United States District Judge James C. Mahan handed down the sentence, which includes three years of supervised release in addition to the 10-year prison term.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mina Chang, with United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada making the announcement. The severity of the sentence reflects the heinous nature of the crime, which has left the victim with lasting physical and emotional trauma.
The use of a Tomahawk hatchet as a weapon adds a disturbing layer to the assault, highlighting the potential for extreme violence in such attacks. The fact that Booker pleaded guilty to the charge underscores the strength of the evidence against him and the gravity of his actions.
The sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. As the justice system continues to grapple with the complexities of violent crime, cases like Booker’s underscore the need for swift and decisive action to protect victims and prevent future assaults.
In the aftermath of the sentencing, the community can take some solace in the knowledge that justice has been served. However, the incident also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that exist in public spaces and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public to prevent such crimes.
