Hayward Meth Dealer Gets 7 Years Federal Time

HAYWARD, WI – Nathanial Johnson, 34, of Hayward, Wisconsin, is headed to federal prison for seven years after pleading guilty to possessing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine intended for distribution. The sentence, handed down today by Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson, reflects the gravity of Johnson’s operation and his disregard for the law, according to federal prosecutors.

The bust went down August 5, 2024, when law enforcement descended upon Johnson’s camper, finding it teeming with customers ready to score methamphetamine. Johnson, in a pathetic attempt to evade capture, tripped while exiting the camper, scattering a bag of drugs at his feet. The jig was up. Those inside readily admitted they were there to buy from him, confirming the camper as a central hub for his illegal operation.

A search of the camper revealed a staggering 329 grams of methamphetamine, alongside a digital scale, over $1,400 in cash, and other paraphernalia indicative of large-scale drug dealing. But the poison didn’t stop there. Authorities also uncovered 5 bindles of fentanyl, packaged for street-level distribution, and additional bags containing approximately 15 grams of the deadly opioid. This wasn’t just a meth operation; Johnson was peddling a potentially lethal combination.

During sentencing, Judge Peterson didn’t mince words, voicing serious concerns about Johnson’s lengthy criminal history and his repeated failures while under community supervision. The judge explicitly stated that Johnson presented an increased risk to the public, escalating from smaller offenses to “pound-level” drug dealing. Peterson emphasized that protecting the community took precedence, given Johnson’s pattern of returning to drug use and fleeing from the law.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, with crucial support from the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, City of Hayward Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Ayala skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the seven-year sentence.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the relentless flow of methamphetamine and fentanyl into Wisconsin communities. While one dealer is off the streets, the Grimy Times will continue to relentlessly pursue those who profit from poisoning our towns and cities. The sentence sends a message, but the fight against the drug trade is far from over.
