PROVIDENCE, RI – Jose Alejandro Morales Cordon, a 37-year-old Guatemalan national, is facing federal charges after being indicted by a Rhode Island grand jury for illegal reentry into the United States. The indictment follows a fingerprint match that flagged Cordon’s status with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to federal authorities, Cordon was previously deported from the U.S. in 2018. He resurfaced on ICE’s radar in June 2025, when a biometric fingerprint scan – entered into the National Crime Enforcement Center – connected him to outstanding state charges of assault and cyberstalking. The initial state arrest triggered the federal investigation, revealing his deported status.
Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced the indictment, signaling a continued federal focus on border security and enforcement of immigration laws. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie M. White, who will present the evidence before U.S. District Court.
The investigation was spearheaded by ICE, highlighting the agency’s reliance on biometric technology to identify and apprehend individuals with prior deportation orders. Cordon is currently scheduled to be arraigned on July 28, 2025, where he will formally enter a plea. He faces potential penalties under federal law for illegal reentry, which can include imprisonment and further deportation proceedings.
This case falls under the umbrella of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide Department of Justice initiative. The operation aims to bolster efforts against illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and safeguard communities from violent crime. It integrates resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), demonstrating a multi-pronged approach to federal law enforcement.
It’s crucial to remember that a federal indictment represents an accusation, not a conviction. Jose Alejandro Morales Cordon is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
