Roswell Man Gets 17 Months for Threatening FBI’s Wray

ATLANTA – A Roswell, Georgia man will spend the next seventeen months behind bars for a venomous online threat directed at former FBI Director Christopher Wray. John Woodbury, 35, received the sentence today after pleading guilty to transmitting a threat in interstate commerce.

The case, investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, centers around a chilling message Woodbury posted on 4chan.org on June 7, 2023. The post included what Woodbury believed to be Director Wray’s home address, accompanied by violent rhetoric. According to court documents, Woodbury wrote, “Let’s show them what a fucking ‘Nazi’ . . . looks like. . . . It’s time to burn these mother fuckers down and hang them from trees. Hit them where it fucking hurts. Hit Chris at his home. Make his family fear stepping one foot outside their god damn door.”

U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg didn’t mince words, stating, “My office has zero tolerance for threats against law enforcement officers.” Hertzberg emphasized the gravity of such actions, adding, “Threatening to harm public servants who enforce our criminal laws weakens the foundation of our society and will be punished accordingly.” The prosecution successfully argued that Woodbury’s online rant constituted a credible threat, warranting significant jail time.

FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown echoed these sentiments. “The functioning of our democracy requires that our country’s public servants be able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives,” Brown stated. “The sentencing of John Woodbury is yet another example of the FBI’s commitment to holding those accountable who threaten public officials.” The case underscores the FBI’s active monitoring of online threats and its willingness to pursue prosecution.

United States District Judge Sarah E. Geraghty handed down the seventeen-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. Woodbury pleaded guilty on April 18, 2025. The sentence aims to deter similar behavior and send a clear message that threatening federal officials carries severe consequences. This isn’t just about protecting individuals; it’s about safeguarding the integrity of the justice system itself.
