RAPID CITY, SD – Five years in federal prison. That’s the sentence handed down to Shelina Martinez, 34, of Denver, Colorado, for her part in flooding the Rapid City area and Pine Ridge Reservation with methamphetamine. U.S. District Court Judge Karen E. Schreier delivered the sentence on August 8, 2025, following Martinez’s guilty plea in May.
Martinez wasn’t a kingpin, but she was a vital link in a chain that funneled large quantities of meth from Denver into South Dakota. According to court documents, between January 2022 and February 2024, Martinez actively participated in a conspiracy to distribute the deadly drug. While not solely responsible for the entire operation, she assisted with the transportation of the narcotics on multiple occasions.
The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury in February 2024, detailed a sophisticated network moving significant amounts of methamphetamine across state lines. Investigators believe the conspiracy deliberately targeted vulnerable communities within the Pine Ridge Reservation, exploiting addiction for profit. The bust is the latest in a series of crackdowns on out-of-state drug rings preying on South Dakota.
Beyond the five-year prison term, Martinez will face another five years of supervised release upon her eventual return to society. Judge Schreier also ordered her to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund – a meager sum considering the damage caused by the drug she helped distribute. She was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Wyoming State Highway Patrol, and the North Metro Denver Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting evidence that sealed Martinez’s fate.
This conviction sends a clear message: those who profit from the misery of others, regardless of where they come from, will be held accountable. While one link in the chain has been broken, authorities warn that the fight against methamphetamine trafficking is far from over. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and expose the networks that poison our communities.
