Marion Man Gets 10+ Years for Ice Meth Pipeline

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Robert Owen Bell, a 48-year-old from Marion, Iowa, is facing over a decade behind bars after being sentenced for flooding the streets of Cedar Rapids and Marion with ice methamphetamine. Bell received a 130-month federal prison sentence on August 13, 2025, following a guilty plea entered February 11, 2025, to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

The case, a joint effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Cedar Rapids Police Department, revealed that throughout 2023, Bell teamed up with an accomplice to peddle the highly addictive drug. Investigators used a confidential source to make two separate buys directly from Bell, netting over 100 grams of pure ice meth. This wasn’t just small-time dealing; Bell was a key cog in a distribution network.

Law enforcement caught a break on November 14, 2023, when officers observed Bell making a run to his co-conspirator’s residence. A subsequent traffic stop of Bell’s vehicle yielded a significant haul: approximately 65.64 grams of ice methamphetamine. The search confirmed what investigators already suspected – Bell wasn’t just moving small amounts; he was responsible for distributing over 1.5 kilograms of the drug.

United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams handed down the sentence in Cedar Rapids, making it clear that drug trafficking carries severe consequences. Bell’s 130-month sentence is a stark reminder that those who profit from addiction will be held accountable. Adding to the sentence, Bell will also serve a 5-year term of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. Forget about parole – the federal system doesn’t offer it.

Special Assistant United States Attorney Jared Manternach skillfully prosecuted the case, building a solid argument based on the evidence gathered by the DEA and Cedar Rapids PD. This conviction is a win for law enforcement, taking a significant player off the streets and disrupting the flow of dangerous drugs into the community.
