Wyandotte Court Bookkeepers Indicted in $900K Scam

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A brazen theft has rocked the Wyandotte County District Court, as two former bookkeepers stand accused of pilfering $900,000 from the very system they were entrusted to uphold. A federal grand jury returned an indictment this week, laying out the charges against Julia Roberts, 65, of Kansas City, Kansas, and Vicki Robinson, 63, of Bonner Springs.

The indictment details a calculated conspiracy to commit wire fraud, along with individual counts of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Roberts and Robinson, in their roles handling incoming funds for the Wyandotte County Clerk Office, allegedly exploited their positions between January 2018 and February 2023, systematically siphoning off cash.

Court documents paint a picture of a sophisticated cover-up. The pair allegedly used the clerk of court’s signature to generate unauthorized, fraudulent checks. These checks, appearing legitimate on the surface, were deposited into the county clerk office’s bank account. This maneuver created a false balance – a corresponding debit and credit that masked the missing cash within the Court’s accounting system, effectively hiding the ongoing theft from auditors.

The scheme went undetected for five years, a testament to its meticulous planning. However, investigators with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) eventually uncovered the fraud, leading to the indictment. The stolen funds represent a significant loss for Wyandotte County, impacting court resources and public trust.

Roberts and Robinson made their initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Angel D. Mitchell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas on September 3, 2025, and September 5, 2025, respectively. They are currently awaiting further court proceedings. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ryan J. Huschka and Michelle McFarlane are leading the prosecution.

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a finding of guilt. Both Roberts and Robinson are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But the allegations are serious, and if convicted, they face significant penalties for betraying the public trust and defrauding the Wyandotte County District Court.
