Marley R. Taylor, a 27-year-old resident of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, pleaded guilty yesterday to the deliberate destruction of religious property, a crime that has sent shockwaves through the local community.
In a grim turn of events, Taylor confessed to using an axe to decapitate both a statue of Mary and Jesus at a Catholic church. The 27-year-old’s motivation was fueled by his belief that people prayed to the statues as objects of worship. The marble statues were hand-carved in Italy and held significant religious significance.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson, and Chief Jason Newby. Taylor faces a severe penalty for his actions: up to three years in federal prison and a restitution payment of at least $35,935.
Assistant Attorney General Dhillon emphasized the intolerable nature of the crime, stating that the Department of Justice stands firmly against anti-Christian bias and will hold accountable anyone who targets Americans based on their religious beliefs. U.S. Attorney Bumgarner echoed these sentiments, warning that attacks on religion would not be tolerated in the Western District of Kentucky.
Special Agent Olson highlighted the violation of constitutional rights underpinning Taylor’s actions, emphasizing the FBI’s commitment to protecting American citizens’ religious freedoms. Chief Newby commended federal partners for their support and vowed to protect Hopkinsville citizens from those who threaten their quality of life with violence.
This chilling case is being jointly investigated by the FBI Bowling Green Satellite Office and the Hopkinsville Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Raymond McGee and Trial Attorney Julia White leading the prosecution efforts. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 10, 2026.
