GRETNA, LA – Terrence Thompson Jr., 24, is headed to federal prison after admitting he snatched 232 pieces of mail from a Gretna post office. The feds didn’t just nail him for the thefts, though. Thompson also copped to possessing a legitimate US Postal Service “arrow” key – the kind used by mail carriers – without authorization. How he got the key remains unclear.

According to court documents, Thompson used the key to hit mailboxes, pilfering letters and packages. The U.S. Attorney’s office didn’t release details on what, if anything, Thompson was *looking* for in the mail, just that he illegally possessed the key and took the mail.

U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle announced the sentencing on March 18, 2026, but didn’t specify the length of Thompson’s stay in federal lockup. The charges – unlawful possession of a postal key (18 U.S.C. § 1704) and mail theft (18 U.S.C. § 1708) – carry significant penalties, making it clear the feds take messing with the mail seriously.
