A DC man is heading to federal prison for two years after admitting he was a key cog in a fentanyl and cocaine operation peddling poison out of the Potomac Gardens housing project in Southeast Washington. Maurice Tutt, 52, got 20 months today, courtesy of a U.S. District Court judge.

Tutt wasn’t a kingpin, but he wasn’t just a street-level runner either. Court records indicate he was involved in the larger conspiracy to move fentanyl, crack cocaine, powder cocaine, and meth throughout the neighborhood – a network clearly preying on a vulnerable community.

The bust centered around activity within the Potomac Gardens complex, a known hotbed of drug activity in the city. While the DOJ release doesn’t detail the full scope of the investigation, Tutt’s sentencing points to ongoing efforts to crack down on open-air drug markets and the flow of deadly fentanyl into DC.

This isn’t a lone case. Federal prosecutors are increasingly focusing on these localized drug networks, hoping to dismantle them from the ground up. Expect more sentences like Tutt’s as these investigations continue to unfold. The Northern District of Alabama had no involvement in the case.
