New York’s Attorney General Letitia James has emerged victorious in a significant legal battle as a federal judge dismissed the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) lawsuit against New York’s Protect Our Courts Act.
In a statement, James emphasized the importance of justice and protection for immigrant communities, declaring that ‘Everyone deserves to seek justice without fear.’ The ruling ensures that state courts in New York remain accessible without federal authorities targeting individuals.
This victory follows a landmark ruling by James in 2020, which halted civil immigration arrests near New York courthouses during the Trump administration. Later that year, New York solidified these protections through the Protect Our Courts Act.
The DOJ attempted to dismantle the law in June 2025, but last night, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York ruled that federal immigration law does not override New York’s authority to safeguard court access.
James vowed to continue her office’s fight for the rights and dignity of immigrant communities across New York, underscoring her commitment to defending state laws against federal challenges.
This decision marks a significant victory for state sovereignty and access to justice, as New York stands firm in its efforts to protect its citizens and ensure fair legal proceedings.
