AI Tech Smuggled to China: 3 Face Federal Charges

A trio of men are facing federal charges in the Southern District of New York, accused of running a scheme to funnel high-powered computer servers – and the cutting-edge AI technology inside them – to China. Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, Ruei-Tsang “Steven” Chang, and Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun allegedly violated U.S. export controls, deliberately bypassing regulations to ship the servers overseas.

Federal prosecutors aren’t detailing how the tech was moved, only that the servers were assembled here in the U.S. and packed with sophisticated artificial intelligence components. The indictment, unsealed today, suggests this wasn’t a paperwork error, but a calculated effort to skirt the law. The servers originated in Alabama before disappearing toward China.

The FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division is leading the investigation, indicating the feds believe this case goes beyond simple smuggling and potentially touches on national security concerns. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, along with FBI officials, announced the charges, signaling a crackdown on the illegal transfer of sensitive American technology.
