In a Brooklyn federal courtroom today, al-Qaeda operative Ibrahim Suleiman Adnan Adam Harun, known as “Spin Ghul,” was handed a life sentence for a string of terrorism offenses targeting Americans overseas. Judge Brian M. Cogan imposed the maximum penalty after Harun was convicted at trial on March 16, 2017, on charges including conspiracy to murder U.S. military personnel, conspiracy to bomb the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, and providing material support to al-Qaeda.
Harun, who joined al-Qaeda weeks before the September 11 attacks, trained in militant camps in Afghanistan and swore allegiance to Osama bin Laden. Operating under senior commander Abdul Hadi al-Iraqi in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Harun became a committed foot soldier in al-Qaeda’s global war against the West. His criminal turn culminated in a deadly ambush on April 25, 2003, near the Afghan-Pakistan border, where he and fellow jihadists opened fire on a U.S. military patrol using machine guns and grenades, killing two American soldiers and seriously injuring others.
U.S. Attorney Richard P. Donoghue made it clear: this sentence sends a message. “This case demonstrates our commitment to bringing to justice those who target American citizens serving their country abroad. We will be relentless in our efforts to hold terrorists like the defendant accountable for their crimes,” he said. The Eastern District of New York, alongside the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, tracked Harun’s path from Saudi Arabia to the battlefield and ultimately to prosecution.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Edward C. O’Callaghan emphasized the gravity of Harun’s actions. “The evidence presented at trial established that the defendant and other jihadists attacked a U.S. military patrol in Afghanistan, resulting in the death of two American soldiers and the serious injury of others.” He credited interagency cooperation across law enforcement and intelligence sectors for ensuring justice was served.
Harun’s reach extended beyond Afghanistan. After the deadly ambush, he plotted to bomb the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria and targeted other Western interests abroad. NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill noted, “Harun was a dedicated and early soldier in bin Laden’s al-Qaeda… He launched attacks against US service members in Afghanistan in 2003, killing two and injuring many others.” Harun’s capture and prosecution spanned international borders, aided by Italian authorities including the Prosecutor’s Office in Palermo, the Italian National Police, Guardia di Finanza, and Carabinieri.
FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney, Jr. declared, “Justice has been served on behalf of the victims of Spin Ghul’s grisly attack on U.S. military patrol members in 2003.” With Harun now locked away for life, federal and local agencies reaffirmed their vow: no terrorist, no matter how deeply embedded or far-flung, will evade American justice.
